  z-Tree 2.0.x-2.1.0: Known Bugs

  • z-Leaf freezes on computers with Windows 95, 98 and ME
What happens: On a Windows 95 (as well as Windows 98 and Windows ME) computer z-Leaf consumes more and more system resources and eventually freezes. You can terminate the z-Leaf and restart it. However, it freezes more and more quickly. So far, I did not find the reason for this bug.
Workaround: The problem does not occur in Windows NT and in Windows 2000

  • Error in data logging
In some sessions the data was not correctly logged in the *.xls file. What happens? In table which do not have a fixed number of record (the contracts table or user defined tables), in can happen that records are stored more than once. This occurs only if there are less record in a later period than in an earlier period. In this case it occasionally happens that the table is "filled" with old data. Fortunately, this error can easily be recognized in the file. There is a new command in the "Tools" menu - "Fix File..." - that corrects a corrupt file. You will get a message if there was actually an error in the file. Furthermore, if you use the tool "Seperate Tables..." in the Tools menu in version 2.1 or later, then the files will also automatically be fixed. Please apply one of these commands to the *.xls files of sessions where you worked with contract table or with user defined tables that did not have a predefined number of records. There is no problem if you use only the globals and the subjects table.
Important: I could not yet reproduce this error. This means that probably, it is still present. It could be that the error only occurs if the table is opened (and/or closed) in z-Tree. (If you check your files, please let me know the result and tell me whether you looked at the data in the affected tables during the experiment.)

  • A crash occurs if a treatment is running and parameter table of that treatment was modified and then closed
Workaround: Don't close the parameter table when the treatment is running.

  • The parameter table is not checked before the treatment starts

  • An auction with timeout -1 does not have an unlimited timeout
Workaround: Use a large number instead.

  • z-Tree does not work in when started on a Banyan Vines server.
    Workaround: Use Windows NT instead.

If you find bug, please first check this list. If the bug is not on this list, send an email to ztree@iew.unizh.ch. To correct a bug, I need the version number of z-Tree and a description how the error occurred. What did you do and what did not work as desired? If possible send the treatment that caused the bug.
