ANNOUNCEMENT - GERMAN VERSION BELOW

Professor Fabrizio Zilibotti, Chair of Macroeconomics and Political Economy at the University of Zurich, has been awarded the Yrjö Jahnsson Award. This is the European equivalent of the American John Bates Clark medal, and is the most prestigious European award in economics for economists under the age of 45. The announcement was made on August 27 2009 in a plenary session of the Annual Congress of the European Economic Association in Barcelona.

This prize is given every second year by the Finnish Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation and the European Economic Association to the best economist(s) under the age of 45 «who has made a contribution that is significant to economics in Europe». The list of previous nominees includes Jean-Jacques Laffont (Toulouse), Jean Tirole (Toulouse), Richard Blundell (University College London), Torsten Persson (Stockholm University), Nobuhiro Kiyotaki (Princeton University), John Moore (London School of Economics and Edinburgh), Philippe Aghion (Harvard), Guido Tabellini (Università Bocconi), Mathias Dewatripoint (Universitè Libre de Bruxelles), Tim Besley (London School of Economics), Jordi Gali (CREi Barcelona) and Gilles Saint Paul (Toulouse). This year's award is shared with Professor John Van Reenen from the London School of Economics.

The selection committee, chaired this year by Professor Guido Tabellini, consists of five members, four nominated by the European Economic Association and one by the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation. It consults the most prominent economists worldwide, and uses their responses together with their own judgment to select the nominees.

According to the official motivation, «Fabrizio Zilibotti has made important contributions to macroeconomics, political economics and labor economics. In particular, he has greatly improved our understanding of how technological innovation affects economic growth at different stages of economic development. He also contributed to the positive analysis of the welfare state, explaining how economic and political forces interact to shape government redistribution.»

BEKANNTMACHUNG – DEUTSCHE VERSION

Professor Dr. Fabrizio Zilibotti, Lehrstuhl für Makroökonomie und Politische Ökonomie an der Universität Zürich, wird mit dem Yrjö Jahnsson Award ausgezeichnet. Dies ist das europäische Pendant der amerikanischen John Bates Clark Medal und ist die höchste Auszeichnung in der Ökonomie, die im europäischen Raum an den oder die besten Ökonomen verliehen wird, die jünger als 45 Jahre alt sind. Die Verleihung fand am 27. August 2009 während des jährlichen Kongresses der European Economic Association statt.

Diese Auszeichnung wird jedes zweite Jahr von der finnischen Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation und der European Economic Association an den/die besten Ökonomen, die jünger als 45 sind und einen signifikanten Beitrag zur ökonomischen Forschung in Europa geleistet haben, vergeben. Der Yrjö Jahnsson Award wurde zuvor an Jean-Jacques Laffont (Toulouse), Jean Tirole (Toulouse), Richard Blundell (University College London), Torsten Persson (Stockholm University), Nobuhiro Kiyotaki (Princeton University), John Moore (London School of Economics and Edinburgh), Philippe Aghion (Harvard), Guido Tabellini (Università Bocconi), Mathias Dewatripoint (Universitè Libre de Bruxelles), Tim Besley (London School of Economics), Jordi Gali (CREi Barcelona) and Gilles Saint Paul (Toulouse) vergeben. Professor Dr. Fabrizio Zilibotti teilt die diesjährige Auszeichnung mit Prof. John Van Reenen von der London School of Economics.

Das Auswahlkomitee, geleitet von Professor Guido Tabellini, besteht aus fünf Mitgliedern, vier von der European Economic Association und eines von der Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation gewählt. Es konsultiert die wichtigsten Ökonomen weltweit und fällt seinen Entschluss aufgrund der eingegangen Antworten sowie aufgrund ihres eigenen Urteils.

Die offizielle Begründung für die Auszeichnung lautet: «Professor Dr. Fabrizio Zilibotti erhält die Auszeichnung aufgrund seiner wichtigen Beiträge in der Makroökonomie, Politischen Ökonomie und Arbeitsmarktökonomie. Im Speziellen hat er unser Verständnis wie technologische Innovation ökonomisches Wachstum auf den verschiedenen Stufen der ökonomischen Entwicklung beeinflusst stark verbessert. Er hat auch zur positiven Analyse des Wohlfahrtstaates beigetragen, indem er erklärt, wie ökonomische und politische Kräfte interagieren, um die staatliche Umverteilung zu gestalten.»
